Electrovaya manufactures prismatic cells that have a laminated polymer “pouch” construction with a flat geometry. A wide spectrum of sizes, including large-format cells, can be manufactured. This scale-up capability is critical for the reliability of large battery systems.

Electrovaya’s view of cell design advantages/disadvantages:

  Prismatic, Laminated Cylindrical, Canister

Large-format /
Ability to Scale-up
Excellent Limited
Thermal Characteristics Very good Good in small cells
Limited in larger cells
Safety (from pressure
build-up in large-format cells)
Intrinsic (soft shorts lead to “puffing” of cells, similar to microwave popcorn bags. This causes the cell to stop functioning.) Requires “vents” in construction to release pressure. Substantial pressure may cause cell to explode.
Packaging Efficiency Excellent: rectangular construction allows maximized use of space in a box
Varies with system design. Gaps between cylinder cans may cause up to 22% volume loss in a box
Common Uses in Consumer Products Cellphone Batteries Laptops, power tools
Availability Growing in popularity Ubiquitous, Very common
